From Perfection to Progress Story

A Senior engineer client said to me in our 12th session:
Don’t aim for perfection. Do the best you can right now. This has liberated me a lot.

That shift didn’t happen overnight.

Over six months, we kept returning to how perfectionism–especially as a means to earn validation–was quietly holding them back.

They were leading a high-stakes, cross-functional initiative. And under the surface, one thought kept nagging them:

What if I miss something critical, and it’s too late to fix?

That fear had them operating with a constant high guard–and, at times, with real anxiety.

They found themselves over-indexing on tiny signals–like 👍 reactions on Slack–as a stand-in for approval… even though they knew how trivial those markers were.

(Sometimes we’d laugh together at the irony.)

But the deeper fear was harder to shake: That one mistake might embarrass them–or shake leadership’s confidence.

Outwardly, they were thriving. Inwardly, the stress was quietly draining them.

Until it clicked.

The thoughts our discussions triggered helped me recognize the pattern–and see the [draining] impact of aiming for 100% perfection.

Even though leadership had always said it was okay to fail, the message only truly landed once they internalized it.

That internal shift–from perfection to progress–brought profound change.

They now lead high-visibility GenAI adoption meetings with confidence and clarity. They’re focused on what matters: building strategy, driving collaboration, and staying open to feedback.

They’re energized. Empowered.

And–for the first time in a while–hopeful about what’s ahead.
